So I’m contemplating DSL, no more. Day before yesterday I finally went over and got myself Qualitynet’s 256 kbps connection. They have a pretty decent offer on these days where you get double speed for the first three months and a wireless router for free. Cost me KD.159, however, I could’ve saved some had I paid for it online. The only reason I went over was to opt for the monthly payment plan but the guy told me that I would not get the free router in that case. So, I ended up paying the whole amount.
They handed me the wireless router the same day and I got a confirmation SMS yesterday that the service was connected. So far I’m pleased with the speed and the whole process was pretty smooth. Even getting the zero clearance letter from MOC took me 10 minutes tops.
Looks like my 500GB external drive is finally going to come into good use.
I hope I am wrong, but a friend of mine was told to buy another wireless router brand from the market. It’s better than what comes from Qnet.
They gave me a SpeedTouch THOMSON ST585 and it seems to be doing a decent job thus far. What sucks is that Qnet’s seems to be facing some internet issues already and its only my second day!
ur first download of the day..:)

Thanks Eddy, I’ll take care of that immediately! 🙂
Is there some download quota? also, the cost that you mentioned, is it for one year? and is there some DSL line rent that you have to pay in addition to the ISP cost? Just trying to get a feel of the DSL situation in Q8. 😀
The speed touch router is a nice work horse. The wireless has decent speed and range. However, I could not get the router’s firewall started. Also, it does not allow wireless MAC address filtering. These should not be too big a problem if you have:
1. a good firewall and antivirus combo
2. have enabled wireless encription and chnaged the login password for the router (to stop the unwanted freeloaders.
Hope you enjoy your DSL connection for a long time to come 🙂
Nice to hear from you Musharraf!
Yes, the payment is for one year and there are no additional payments to be made. The guy mentioned there is no download limit.
For sure, wireless encryption is the first thing I did. I’m also using it to share and access files between my laptop and PC over the SpeedTouch.
I’m well on my way to filling up that 500GB external drive now! 🙂
how can u share files between laptop and pc using a router???
Enable File Sharing on the PC and ensure that both machines have the same workgroup. After that you can access it using your PC’s IP address, or through My Network Places.
Not sure how it would work out if one of the machines is an Apple though.
I’ve done a bit of research. Might go for United Networks 512Kb deal. But I’ve been searching on the web for places in Kuwait to buy a wireless router.
Any ideas as to the best places to look?
Steven: Your best bet would probably by Ibn Khaldoun St in Hawally. I’m not sure about the other providers, but my experience with QualityNet has been pretty decent so far.
well, instead of paying like 25-30 kd for a wireless router, if u happen to have a desktop, u can buy the wireless usb device for no more than 5 kd, another normal router for 5 kd…and leave ur computer on provided it doesnt over heat, just leave gd ventilation for it, and connect ur laptop to the wireless network in ur desktop…that way u have saved abt 15 kd or something ? get an extra internal hard disk, i think 15 kd would get u a nice WD 120 gigs and a mobile rack and voila…u payed the same amount of money to get a wireless connection at home, and as a bonus an extra 120 gigs…
Assalamoalaikum did I read KD there!! Wow, seems the places I have lived in will haunt me forever!!
good going for the router, yes I am through with cables too, InshaAllah.
