This epic has been in the Kuwait theatres for a while and today I realized I better watch it before they take it off. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name; it is about the Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.) where a handful of Spartans fight it out with hordes of Persians. It seems the writer’s have skewered the truth to some extent to further glorify the Spartans valor against impossible odds.
For me, this one is all about awe-inspiring special effects and mind-numbing battle sequences which has to be enjoyed on the large screen. Though it sucks that we didn’t get the IMAX version in Kuwait.
Update: So I ended up going to Fanar to catch the 3pm show on Friday. Since we couldn’t take Rohail along; Maliha insisted that I should watch it on my own since she knew I had been looking forward to this one for quite a while. I owe her one!
Bottom line: Amazing effects and battle sequences as expected, however, it got very repetitive and bringing in different beasts to challenge the Spartans didn’t seem very refreshing after a while. What I loved was the metal music during the fights. Furthermore, the golden corn-field scenes looked very inspired from The Gladiator. IMO it is still a must cinema watch.
