Lulu Hypermarket in Kuwait

lulu-logo.jpg

Last week we decided to do our monthly groceries from the new Lulu Hypermarket since they’ve got a chain in the Middle East and it has recently opened up here in Kuwait. It turned out to be better than my expectations and seems like an interesting mix of Sultan Center and City Center.

They have the regular supermarket stuff on the ground floor and the first floor has all sorts of other items (decorative, clothes, furniture, electronics, etc.). The quality is comparable to what you would find at Max, Sana, etc. but they have a much better variety (especially on kids-wear) and even better prices.

They even have their own branded grocery items (e.g. salt, bread and some other stuff) and they have placed them such that you would run into them before you see the more well-known brands; or that is what I felt anyhow.

I still don’t see what makes it a hypermarket or for that matter; what exactly is a hypermarket in the first place.

I would probably go there again.

    Thanks Hisham.

No complaints about Sultan Center here. Just that I don’t feel its the most economical place to do your groceries even though it probably does offer the best variety and quality.

Lulu.. thats a funny name.. 😀

but how did the Sultan Center people come to know about your post?? Are they using google alerts or what?

  4. 5 Sabah Hussain April 25, 2007 at 2:17 pm

    It is, isn’t it? 🙂

I don’t know, though the blogging community in Kuwait is very active and a lot of people are going around reading blogs, so he may have stumbled on my blog from there.

Last month I Purchased Samsung’ Ipod from LULu Hypermarket in Kuwait. They offered me one year warranty.

I found some problem with the set and took it to LuLu.

They were first reluctant to accept the set for repairing.
After some discussion, they took it for service.

Now 2 weeks gone. I did not receive my unit back.

The after sales service in Electronic section is very bad.

Now I have decided not to buy any electronic item from LuLu.

It would have been beeter if the winners in the raffle draw or any draws that are conducted by LULU to be put in the Website as the customers are never called or intimated about the prize winning.

    Thanks

ITS: Not sure yet, maybe another 4-5 weeks. Who is this?

  13. 16 Jen December 22, 2007 at 9:32 am

Well its true that the staff are not well trained and some of them do not even know basic English! I had bought a pair of jeans couple of weeks ago and had even got it altered from them to fit the lenght but on reaching home I found there were two holes near the belt which would render the jeans useless after few wears since the thread was very loose there so I went to Lulu and got a credit note instead of refund which was good enough even though it was altered. But the lesson now is scrutinise the stuff thoroughly before purchasing it!

  14. 17 Sabah Hussain December 22, 2007 at 2:30 pm

Yeah I was at Lulu Hypermarket yesterday myself and I also got the feeling that their staff had trouble speaking english and also had very little knowledge about the products.

I was enquiring about some of the baby car seats, and their staff couldn’t even answer basic questions like, what wieght it could handle, or how it would be fitted in the car.

  15. 18 shehim December 25, 2007 at 3:56 pm

    Dear ALl,

Iam also a regular customer in LuLu Qatar. I have also come similar issues. But everything got resolved immediately. You got knock the right doors for that. Go Immediately to their Regional Director, Or General Manager of the shop. Or else write mails to their central managment, BijuK@emkegroup.ae or RAbraham@emkegroup.ae.

I had questioned their staff’s inability to speak well. They have told me that since they r in a development spree, their trained staff are moved quickly to new places & replaced by fresh ones. They dont speak well initially. So what we have to insist on speaking to Supervisors or Managers who are well trained.

Am still sticking on to LuLu.

  17. 20 Dr. Rahmat April 30, 2008 at 2:04 pm

    Dear All,
I too was fascinated to see Lulu here in kuwait, and wish they expand and come somewhere near Fahaheel. But not any more, everytime i went there, i have spent more than necessary, suppose i went with a list for approx KD 15/- i spent KD 50/-, but that is not thier fault, its mine. But the other thing is that most of the things there is expensive, I prefer Honest or Gulfmart(fahaheel) even citycentre is cheaper. and the quality of service, its horrible. I dont know hoew they survive for more than a year, the staff is horrible, no smile… no service& knows only malyalam as they are all from the STATE OF KERALA. I had bought a mixer grinder (expensive)and went to return it next day as when i tried it at home i did not like the locking system, it was a bit complicated, so i decided to go in for another brand. the guy at customer sales refused to exchange it saying i cannot go go less value, so i said i dont want refund i will buy more items and pay the difference, then he came up with the excuse that i had used it, he started smelling it seeing in the defect of me repacking etc, i had to waste nearly half an hour to say i have not used it and they was no smell of any ingredient…….. it was a horrible thing, this would not happen if it was sultan centre, there they always have a smile, even if the things are more priced. at lulu its simple, indian mentality and above all kerala-mania.( i have nothing against kerala or india as I’m indian and my better half is a keralite). but lulu here is a disaster, its not what its in Dubai(I’ve been there too).

  18. 21 mohun July 1, 2008 at 10:33 am

I am a regular customer of Lulu Kuwait. It is one of the best store, large varieties are available.Sometimes their price fluctuations are beyond understanding.e.g.cucumber selling at 30-40 fills a kilo on 21st,june -but 300 fills on 28th,june.Similarly watermelons sowed a fluctuation of 10 times, why so?.Their collection of kid clothing is nice and cheap

HI,ACTUALLY I HEARD THAT LULU MANAGEMENT OVER QATAR IS VERY POOR, FOR THE STAFF AND EVEN SALAY ALSO TOO LOW AND MOST OF THEM WHO EVER WROKING ON LULU THEY R READY TO ESCAPE WITHIN FEW MONTHS…AS THEY JOINED DUTY

  44. 49 Mathappan September 6, 2011 at 10:22 am

As far as I am concerned, the prices in Lulu Super Market is comparitively chaper than any other Super Markets in Al Ain , U.A.E. I was in the purchasing dept of Al Noor Super market in Qatara, Al Ain. I was making the pricing also in the house-hold dept. Many of the items we were having cheaper rates. On other cases I used to visit Lulu, find the prices and adjust our prices accordingly. I resigned from Al Noor by 2002 and there-after how .. I do not know. Lulu was the only Super market were I have to compete with

  45. 50 Swat Bone November 14, 2011 at 3:13 pm

@Nisad: Its not only in Qatar, the entire group pays low. I remember my interview back in 2001 in Lulu’s first ever location, and they offered me peanuts after saying i was over-qualified (even though i don’t believe in this phrase) and to my surprise, none of them spoke fluent English. Nevertheless, any retail outlet would offer in the market is good for freshers who really want to learn from scratch and not wanting a white collar job at start, so I dont blame Lulu Group.
@Sajan: I’m sorry to reply to your post of 2008, but if your reading this… Alghanim, Eureka and all the shops i Kuwait give respect to all their customers. Ive been a regular customers to Alghanim at all their stores, and being an Indian, I haven’t faced any ignorant salesperson, ever.
And for all who look for after sales service on electronics… most companies are bad, but I have to point out at Alghanim, they are the best, as long as you follow their terms and conditions.

Why buy from Lulu, an indian chain, and not from your local groceries? is this how you like it to be? Filthy indians whom are worth less than shit in their shitty home country, come here and thrive on Arabs money, while sending money back to india so that they can send us more shitty indians… Is this how we Proud Arabs have become? letting foreigners do as they wish in our lands… May God forgive us on judgement day.
