Wonder Bus – Dubai

wb1.jpg

wb2.jpg

Dubai always seems to have a few pleasant surprises. A good friend of mine is going to visit this week and told me about this new and interesting attraction. The Wonder Bus by Sea & Land Adventures is a bus ride that transforms into a sea ride! I’ll be sure to check it out the next time i’m there. However, if you check all the pictures in their gallery (e.g. bus plunging into the water), it gets you wondering whether its alright for infants.

What does BMW stand for?

I was driving to work today in the morning and saw the new VW Passat in front of me. I kind of like what they’ve done overall and it gives the car a more classier look. Then I just thought that VW stands for Volkswagon, so what does BMW stand for. Here you go:

Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works.

The Fossil O-ring Digi watch

ph1084.jpg

I just checked out this unique watch from Fossil. The O-ring Digi is a Philippe S+arck product and as you can see, it has a hollow centre. The hours are displayed digitally as numbers while the minutes fill-in around the circle/ring. Sure looks worth it for $110.

Visited The Avenues

Yesterday we thought we’d go over and check out Kuwait’s latest mall; The Avenues. The architecture and design seem new and refreshing, however, I was kind of disappointed that there wasn’t a single electronics store there. This may be because all the shops still haven’t opened up and there may still be hope for me. Another odd thing I noted was that even though there were 5 Starbucks (!); the food court was still not operational.

Carrefour was also not ready and when you look at the mall from the outside it seems that there is still plenty of space left which may serve as extensions to the mall later. I still don’t see the whole point of having multiples of the same shop in one mall. 5 Starbucks, 2-3 H&Ms, a couple of Claire’s and probably some more which I didn’t notice.

Also by the location, something tells me that the whole Marina Mall crowd isn’t going to migrate in a hurry.

More pics here.

Sweethearts in Kuwait

OK, I’ve got no clue what this ad is about or what it means, but the term ‘Sweethearts’ and the brother, don’t seem to be gelling too well here.

300 – the movie

300poster4.jpg

This epic has been in the Kuwait theatres for a while and today I realized I better watch it before they take it off. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name; it is about the Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.) where a handful of Spartans fight it out with hordes of Persians. It seems the writer’s have skewered the truth to some extent to further glorify the Spartans valor against impossible odds.

For me, this one is all about awe-inspiring special effects and mind-numbing battle sequences which has to be enjoyed on the large screen. Though it sucks that we didn’t get the IMAX version in Kuwait.

Update: So I ended up going to Fanar to catch the 3pm show on Friday. Since we couldn’t take Rohail along; Maliha insisted that I should watch it on my own since she knew I had been looking forward to this one for quite a while. I owe her one!

Bottom line: Amazing effects and battle sequences as expected, however, it got very repetitive and bringing in different beasts to challenge the Spartans didn’t seem very refreshing after a while. What I loved was the metal music during the fights. Furthermore, the golden corn-field scenes looked very inspired from The Gladiator. IMO it is still a must cinema watch.

Ad – I’m a Linux

mac-pc-linux-transparent.png

This is an interesting take on the ‘I’m a Mac, I’m a PC’ ads by Apple. It introduces Linux into the picture and discusses what would be the best tactic to introduce Linux that would make it look positive against the hipster Mac dude (since the tired businessman which is the PC isn’t much of a competition – speaking strictly from the ad’s perspective).

So what do they do? They let Linux be represented by a smart and confident young woman.

Six Feet Under status

six-feet-under.jpg

Yesterday I finished watching season 3 of Six Feet Under. It is one amazing show and ranks right up there in my favorites with 24, Arrested Development, Prison Break and Family Guy (though admittedly; 24 ranks much higher amongst them all).

I’ve got another three seasons to go and so far there have been multiple interesting plots that have branched out, some of which have also reached their conclusions (or so it seems). With all the sub-plots going on in parallel; it is always exciting to observe how the death in each episode deals with or addresses a certain aspect of death.

For those not in the know; the show is about the lives of a somewhat dysfunctional family (it always has to be that) that runs a funeral home. Almost each episode starts with somebody dying and then proceeds with the different threads/plots that are in progress.

This show is a must-watch in my opinion.

EXIF format

I’ve been reading my photography book and trying to follow the instructions to see what sort of results I get. One issue I faced was that while taking pictures I knew what values I set and it was ok to compare the result with the next image with different settings of aperture, shutter speed and ISO right then, however; later on when I reviewed the images on my PC I had no idea what values I had set. This could be resolved by writing down these values before taking each shot but come on, that is never going to happen since its just too much work.

Upon some research it turns out that most digital cameras save JPEG files with EXIF (EXchangeable Image File) data. This is exactly the information I needed to get the best out of my practice. I found this out was when FLICKR told me that my photos had been taken by a KODAK Z612 camera and even showed me all the settings I had made when I asked for details. I immediately right-clicked an image file and looked at the details and lo and behold there were all the values I wanted.

This is really cool information for me and there are also dedicated EXIF viewers that make the whole experience of comparing your photos more user-friendly. The EXIFPRO Image Viewer is one such viewer and can be downloaded here.
